Job Offers – What to Look For Before Accepting a Job

You aced the job interview and now the company has offered you a job. But, make sure you have all the information you need before accepting that job offer. When a company conducts job interviews, they are evaluating potential employees to see who would be the best fit. In the same way, when you go on a job interview, you should also be looking at the company so that you can decide if that is really where you want to work and spend most of your time.

There are basic details about every job that you should look at before accepting a job offer. Itís helpful to sit down and make a list of what you need and expect from your employer so that you can compare what they are offering to what you need and want. If a job offer does not meet your basic requirements, you need to seriously think about whether or not it is the right job for you.

First of all, salary is important. At a minimum, you have to be sure that you will be able to meet all your financial obligations with the salary you are being offered. Of course, in todayís economic downturn, you may have to decide if you can afford to, or even need to, take a job that pays less than you wanted. If you have been unemployed for six months or longer, you may decide to take a job that pays less than you need in order to start getting back on your feet again. If you are already working, but looking for a new position, then you are in a better position to find a job that pays a salary more in line with what you are looking for.

If you have decided that the salary range offered is what you are looking for, you should then look at the other benefits that are offered to see if they meet your needs. A few of the benefits you may want to check out include:

  • Health and Dental Insurance: If you need health and dental insurance for you and your family, you need to find out exactly what the policy options offered by the company cover. Also, it is important to know just how much, if any, of the premium your employer will pay. This is important to know so that you are aware ahead of time just how much money you may be required to pay later on if you decide to take part in the insurance program offered.

  • Day Care: Some companies offer subsidized day care for families. If you need day care for your children, it is important to find out if the company has a plan to help defray the costs to you and your family.

  • Flexible Schedules: In todayís business world, there are many companies that understand the importance of allowing flexible work schedules for their employees. Some employers let employees work from home under certain circumstances. If this is an option for you, you should check to make sure that working from home does not affect your insurance coverage.

  • Retirement: If the company offers a retirement plan, it is important to know what type it is, and how it is structured. Does the employer pay into the plan for employees? Are there any restrictions you should know about ahead of time? Are employees required to contribute to the plan? When can you begin receiving your benefits? Are there penalties for early withdrawal?

  • Vacation and Holiday Benefits: How many paid holidays does the company offer employees? What is the vacation policy? How many days of annual leave a year are available? If any employee does not use all of their annual vacation in one year, can they carry over the unused days into the next year? Is it possible to sell back unused vacation days?

  • Personal and Sick Days: Does the company offer personal and sick days for employees? If so, what is the procedure for taking a personal or sick day off from work?

  • Maternity and Family Leave: What is the companyís policy for maternity and family leave? Are there limits to the leave policy?

  • Performance and Salary Review: How often are performance reviews conducted and how are salaries reviewed? What are the opportunities for advancement within the company?

All job offers are open to negotiation to some degree. When you are negotiating with a potential future employer, make sure that you emphasize all of your educational and work background and other relevant experience. Use this information to illustrate just how you will contribute and be an asset to the company. Highlight your accomplishments from previous jobs that you have held. If you earned any workplace awards or special recognition, be sure to include them in your discussions to show that you will be a valuable employee.

If you are offered a salary that you consider low, negotiate for a higher pay scale, but you must be flexible. If you do not have previous work experience, you may have to accept a job that starts at a lower rate than you were hoping for. However, if you have the work experience necessary, you can discuss a higher starting wage with the employer when they offer you the job. If the salary range is fixed and cannot be raised at the moment, you can try to negotiate for other benefits, such as additional vacation time, health or retirement benefits. If the employer is serious about wanting to hire you as an employee, they will be willing to negotiate a bit in order to make sure that you have a fair benefits and salary package that you are happy with.
